If some one were to ask me "How was your weekend?"
I can reply in two ways.
One way:
"All in all it turned out ok. Bill managed to turn an otherwise dreadful and painful weekend into a tolerable one"
Second way:
"The weekend started off for me with fasting for 14hrs, early morning drive into town for my first ordeal. After three punctured veins, the nurse managed to suck enough blood out of me to fill the veils needed for testing my cholesterol level - a ritual I have to go through every four months. From there it was off to the next ritual I have to go through once in two years.
This is where I get to use every swear word in the dictionary, hate myself for being born as a female, get mad at every male who ever said they like the 'big ones' and finally just about ready to kill the person (of course had to be a man!) who invented the machine and strangle the doctors and nurses who use it - 'The Squishogram' machine as Bill calls it.
At the end of ten minutes of this comes the realisation - 'it is all for my good' and the intelligent woman calms down and is glad that it is over and is ok for another two years!
Not done yet! Next comes surrendering yourself to a giant x-ray visioned monster who takes a snap shot of every inch of your body - head to toe and a doctor who sits there and watches the movie - another 10 minutes of once in two year ordeal!
On the brighter side of the day, Bill takes me out for breakfast at our favourite 'All day breakfast' place in town and ends my now 18hour fast with Pancakes made from corn flour smothered in maple syrup, home fries cooked just right and a best cup of coffee in town. This is followed by a walk through the town and window shopping and rest up in the park before the next appointment. A picnic lunch at the beach puts a nice ending for the day's outing.
A nice sunny, not too hot, perfect day and nice green estate is welcoming to come home. We both laze around in the yard enjoying a beer and watching the nice blue sky. A power nap under the magnificent trees make me good as new ready to face the world and grateful for good health, wealth and peace of mind.
Bill completes the day with a nice BBQ dinner accompanied by garlic bread (home made) and salad made from all home grown vegetables, greens and herbs (including the garlic this year!).
Saturday was a dull rainy day and I sat in front of the computer most of the time watching our monthly target crawl one K at a time and feeling totally helpless to do anything to make it move faster.
Sunday, after a chat with Amit, I resigned to the fact that we have done all we can and hope for the best on Monday and decided to enjoy the rest of the day. A 3 hour boat ride - trolling the lake and reeling in a decent sized pike relaxed me totally and got me ready to face another week with all of you and 3 hr sleep per nights."
Two ways to describe same weekend. Which one did you like?
The first way is the "CORPORATE COMMUNICATION" way - crisp, brief and to the point. Efficient and time conscious.
The second way is the "NETWORK MARKETING" way - story telling with word picture painting and an open sharing of feelings and emotions. A successful leader must be capable of communicating with the team in a way that hits the message home. It needs time and patience to build lasting relationships. To influence other human beings, sometimes total strangers, to break out of their comfort zone, to build a dream and make them want to achieve their goals needs effort. Ability to paint word pictures is one of the skills that every leader must possess - their communication gives an insight into their character, their belief and makes the listener/reader come a bit closer to them.
One can learn this from songs - especially Hindi movie songs I have been listening to these days. When Bill asks me what is the song about, I can usually summarise it in one sentence - "I love you", "We will be together for ever", "I have been betrayed", "I have lost my love" and so on. However, if one listens to the words and similes and comparisons to moon, sun, stars, flowers, night and even wind and rain the song writers use to paint the picture for us it becomes so much more enjoyable and memorable.
Chose the right way for the right occasion!
